Doodad, thingamajig, whatchamacallit, doohickey, and whatsit (and many more) are all examples of words describing an object or gadget whose actual name the speaker can't recall. "My wife has this weird doodad that curls her hair" or "I lost the doodad that operates the car"

@XiaYuLi doodad is like the word "もの" in Japanese! It doesn't really mean anything other than "thing".
"Doodad" is a very 伯父さん word, so most people use it these days just to be silly www

Instead of "doodad" or "thingamajiggy", most younger people nowadays say "thingy" when they can't remember the name of something they want! (Although thingamajiggy is a little more commonly used than doodad)

Example:
Person A: Can you pass me that thingy (or doodad) over there?

Person B: Oh! You mean your phone?

Person A: Yeah, that! I couldn't remember the word for some reason!


Example:
Person A: "Today I went to a Japanese restaurant!"

Person B: "Cool! What did you eat?"

Person A: "I had cold soba. It was delicious! My friend taught me to use those little thingies that Japanese people eat with a lot!"

Person B: "Oooh chopsticks can be hard to use!"

(In this case, Person B didn't have to ask what it was, because Person B knew what the "thingy" was by context!)
