J'ai été = passé composé.
J'étais = imparfait.
Le passé composé est utilisé pour décrire une action qui est arrivée dans le passé et est maintenant terminée.
L'imparfait est utilisé pour décrire une action en progression dans le passé.

@trynalearnjapanese merci bien, alors c'est préférable de dire "j'ai été marié depuis 3 ans" et dire aussi "j'étais marié il y a 3 ans"?

@zuleikha la réponse dépend de si la personne est encore mariée ou pas.
- Je me suis marié il y a 3 ans (one time event, so it's over. But it doesn't say if he's still maried or not).
- J'étais marié il y a 3 ans (sous-entendu, il ne l'est plus).

@zuleikha "j'étais marié il y a 3 ans" veut dire que tu étais *déjà* marié à cette époque-là.
"j'ai été marié depuis 3 ans" veut dire que tu t'es marié il y a 3 ans et que tu ne l'es plus maintenant. donc cela dépend de ce que tu voulais dire, ou du contexte. ^^
